The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe thunderstorms that could cause infrastructure damage, flooding, and travel disruptions across at least four provinces, while coastal winds threaten beachfront activities in the Western Cape as a cold front moves along the south-west coast.

Impact-based warnings

Orange level 6 warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to damage or loss of infrastructures, settlements, property, vehicles, livelihood, and livestock, injuries and danger to life, and major travel disruptions are expected over the western parts of both Free State and North West.

Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, leading to localised flooding and damage to susceptible formal/informal settlements and infrastructure, are expected over the eastern parts of both Free State and North West and the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

Yellow level 2 warning: Damaging coastal winds, leading to localised disruption of beachfront activities, are expected between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas in the Western Cape.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-related impacts. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
