The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe thunderstorms that could result in damage to property, infrastructure and animals in parts of the Free State, North West and Northern Cape on Thursday, while damaging conditions are expected between Richards Bay and Kosi Bay.
Cloudy and cool to fine conditions can be expected in other provinces with showers in parts.
Impact-based warnings
Orange Level 6 warning: Severe thunderstorms resulting in damage or loss of infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles, livelihoods and livestock, injuries and danger to life, and major travel disruptions expected over the western parts of both Free State and North West, and the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.
Yellow Level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms resulting in damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock, injuries and danger to life, as well as major travel disruptions, are expected over the central parts of North-West, central and eastern Free State, and central interior of the Northern Cape.
Yellow Level 1 warning: Damaging wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation, localised disruption on small harbours and ports for a short period of time, small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing in a locality, localised damage to coastal infrastructure, and localised disruptions to beachfront activities are expected between Richards Bay and Kosi Bay.
In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
