World reacts to the death of Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf


The death of Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah is being mourned by countries in the Middle East and other parts of the world.

Sheikh Nawafwho died on Saturday at the age of 86, remained low-key and focused his three-year reign on trying to resolve the small, oil-rich country’s internal political disputes.

He will be buried on Sunday. Public offices in Kuwait will remain closed for three days and 40 days of national mourning have been declared.

After the death of Sheikh Nawaf became his half-brother Crown Prince Sheikh Meshaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, 83, was quickly named the new emir.

Here are some reactions to the Kuwaiti leader’s death:

Bahrain

The Kingdom of Bahrain mourned the death of the Kuwaiti emir.

“We express our sincere condolences to our brothers, the honorable Al Sabah Royal Family and the dear people of Kuwait,” the Royal Court of Bahrain said in a statement.

Out of respect for the emir’s death, flags in the country will be lowered for three days starting Saturday.

Jordan

Jordan’s King Abdullah bin Al Hussein shared a condolence message on X, formerly Twitter, expressing his sadness over the death of Sheikh Nawaf.

“He was an Arab leader who dedicated his life to serving his country, his people and his nation. We knew him as a man of chivalry, wisdom and [one diligent about] Strengthening Arab relations,” the king said of the emir.

Oman

Oman’s foreign ministry expressed condolences over the emir’s death, saying the late leader was now in “God’s hands.”

Qatar

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar expressed sadness over the death of the Kuwaiti leader.

He also announced a three-day mourning period and ordered flags in the country to be lowered to half-staff.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed their condolences to the Kuwaiti people and announced three days of mourning.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people share the suffering of the brothers in Kuwait,” the Saudi Royal Court said in a statement.

United Arab Emirates

Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said on

United States

US President Joe Biden said he was “saddened” to learn of the Kuwaiti leader’s death.

“Sheikh Nawaf was a valued partner and true friend of the United States throughout his decades of service,” Biden said in a statement.

“Today we mourn his passing and honor his life and shared vision for greater peace and stability in the Middle East,” he added.

Yemen

Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak of the country’s Saudi-backed government expressed condolences over the emir’s death.

In a statement to X, he wished “patience and comfort to the Kuwaiti people.”

Great Britain

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement on

Kosovo

The Kosovo president also expressed his condolences to X.

“His leadership and lifelong commitment to his nation will be a lasting legacy,” said Vjosa Osmani, referring to the emir.

United Nations General Assembly

Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, issued a statement on the death of the emir.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and to the government and people of the State of Kuwait,” Francis said on the X.

European Union

The EU expressed its condolences and sympathy on the death of Sheikh Nawaf.

“The EU remembers the late Emir’s unwavering commitment and dedication to serve his country even in turbulent times. He will be remembered by all who work for regional stability and mutual understanding among nations,” the regional body said in a statement.
