(NewsNation) – While the White House blames Hamas for the end of a temporary ceasefire, it also calls on Israel to limit further civilian casualties in Gaza.

Fighting between Israel and HamasThe terror attack, which has been ongoing since the militant group attacked the country on October 7, was paused last week in return for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, mostly women and teenagers. The original four-day ceasefire was extended twice.

Israeli officials said Hamas violated the ceasefire by failing to provide a list of hostages it wanted released and also by firing rockets into Israeli territory on Friday morning. Israel then resumed rocket attacks on Gaza.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, visiting the region for the third time, placed the blame squarely on Hamas in his remarks to reporters.

“Hamas has reneged on its commitments, even before the end of the pause,” Blinken said Friday.

But Blinken, in his strongest language yet, also called on Israel to limit the number of civilian deaths during the war, calling it imperative that Israel put clear safeguards in place to protect them and maintain aid to Gaza in the future.

“We’re still out there. We are also very focused, as we have been all along, on ensuring that this conflict does not spread and does not escalate in other places,” Blinken said. “I also use our diplomacy to examine not only what happens today and how we deal with it, but also what happens in Gaza the day after and how we can find the path to a lasting, secure peace.” Israelis and Palestinians .”

About 1,200 Israelis were killed, mostly in Hamas’s initial incursion, in which 240 were taken hostage. According to the Associated Press, over 100 hostages were freed during the brief ceasefire, although Israel says 115 adult men, 20 women and two children are still being held captive. That number is believed to include eight Americans. About 240 Palestinian women and children were also released by Israel as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

White House officials said they remained committed to freeing the hostages.

The Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli Security Service said in a joint statement on Friday that the body of one of the hostages, Ofir Tzarfati, who was kidnapped from the Re’im area on October 7, was recently found in the Gaza Strip and brought to Israel .

The IDF and ISA said his family had been informed of his death.

“We express our deep condolences,” it said in a statement. “Our mission is to locate the hostages and bring them home. The IDF and ISA are working in full coordination with relevant national and security authorities and will continue to work until the task is completed.”
