Oscar Pistorius is dismissed Jail on Friday after being granted parole almost eleven years after his girlfriend’s murder Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.

What conditions must Pistorius expect on probation?

Pistorius – known as the “Blade Runner” because of his carbon fiber prosthetic legs he was an athlete – was eligible for parole in March 2023 after serving half of his 13-year, five-month sentence for murder.

On November 24, 2023, he was granted parole effective January 5, 2024

South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said in November that Pistorius would serve the remainder of his sentence in the country’s community corrections system.

He is under the supervision of DCS and is subject to probation until his sentence expires in December 2029.

He will be assigned a surveillance officer who must be informed if Pistorius is looking for work opportunities or moving.

As part of the conditions, Pistorius will not be allowed to consume alcohol or other banned substances and will be banned from giving media interviews, the DCS said.

He is also expected to be home at certain times of the day. The DCS did not specify the hours.

Pistorius must also attend gender-based violence programs and continue anger management therapy sessions, a lawyer for the Steenkamp family said shortly after his parole.

He is expected to live in Pretoria, at least initially. In his uncle’s house.

Why was Pistorius’ early release considered?

A parole board typically considers several factors, including the nature of the crime, the possibility of reoffending, behavior in prison, physical and mental well-being, and possible threats a prisoner may face upon release.

Before his parole, Pistorius also took part in the restorative justice program – a system introduced after the end of apartheid to deal with apartheid-era crimes in a more participatory and conciliatory manner.

A key component of the restorative justice program is a victim-offender dialogue that brings together the parties affected by a crime to reach a solution. Participation is voluntary.

Pistorius was moved to a prison near where the Steenkamp family lived in late 2021, ahead of reconciliation talks aimed at a possible early release from prison.

He and the late Barry Steenkamp – Reeva’s father – took part in the victim-offender dialogue on June 22, 2022.

What was the reaction to his early release?

The Steenkamp family’s lawyer said in November that they were not surprised by the parole decision, which came after Pistorius had served a certain portion of his sentence.

Ahead of the parole hearing, Reeva Steenkamp’s mother June released a statement saying she was not convinced Pistorius had been rehabilitated. But she added that she had forgiven him “a long time ago as I knew for a fact that if I had to hold on to my anger I wouldn’t survive.”

After Pistorius was released on parole, June Steenkamp praised the parole board’s efforts to engage victims.
