  • The Western Cape legislature is set to welcome several new faces following the final candidate list received by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
  • New leadership will be sworn in within 14 days, with outgoing premier Alan Winde and his cabinet serving until then.
  • The legislature was dissolved on 28 May, ahead of the provincial and national elections.

Several new faces are expected to appear in the Western Cape legislature, according to the final list Chief Justice Raymond Zondo received on Thursday.

While the DA retained its majority in the province, new leadership will be sworn in within 14 days. Outgoing premier Alan Winde and his cabinet will continue with their roles until then.

The legislature was dissolved at midnight on Tuesday, 28 May, ahead of the provincial and national elections.

Legislature spokesperson Matthys Odendal said: “The premier and the cabinet remain in their posts and retain their privileges and responsibilities until the election of a new premier at the first sitting of the new Parliament.

“The provincial government continues to operate under the leadership of the current premier and cabinet until a new premier is sworn in and a new cabinet is appointed.”

With the final list of candidates handed over to Zondo on Thursday, the legislature faces a major shake-up.

The DA retains its 24-seat majority in it.

The EFF in the province retains its two seats, while the GOOD party, FF Plus, Al-Jama-ah and ACDP retain one seat each.

The National Coloured Congress (NCC) also secured one seat.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) secured three seats.

Several new members are expected to join the legislature, including:

– Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters who has served in the National Assembly for the DA since May 2014.

– Former DA MP Dave Bryant.

– Former DA councillor in the Stellenbosch Municipality Peter Johnson.

– DA provincial chairperson Jaco Londt.

– George Mayor Leon van Wyk.

– DA MP Benedicta van Minnen.

– Garden Route District Mayor Memory Booysen.

Bryant told News24: “It was a privilege to serve in the sixth Parliament and as part of the shadow cabinet. I am looking forward to contributing to the Western Cape legislature in whatever role I am given.”

The ANC has seen a decline in its representation, dropping from 12 seats to eight on the opposition benches, resulting in some members not returning.

Among those not set to return are Pat Marren, Gladys Bakubaku-Vos and Lulama Mvimbi.

GOOD’s general-secretary, Brett Herron, will return to the legislature.

Herron said he looked forward to serving in the legislature and fight for the Western Cape to work for everyone not just the few.

“Far too many residents of the Western Cape are excluded from the services many believe everyone gets. Too many residents accept the suffering is normal.

“It’s not normal and it’s everyone’s duty to contribute to ending the widespread suffering that is pervasive in our country and in our province.

“Everyone is entitled to the same level of infrastructure, amenities and services and we will champion a programme that pursues equality,” he added.

Fazloodien Abrahams will represent the NCC in the legislature.

Additionally, Bazil Petrus of the PA will be joining the legislature alongside former Beaufort West council speaker Noal Constable.
