(NewsNation) – Given the increasing pressure to reach Ceasefire agreement with HamasRepresentative Madeleine Dean says the United States has a responsibility to ensure the war in Gaza is fought “justly.”

“I support Israel without question, but we have a duty to question whether a war is not being waged in accordance with international law,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said on Sunday on “The Hill Sunday.”

She has been in Israel since the beginning of the war. The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 and said she will remain in her seat when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses the U.S. Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson has said Netanyahu will speak in a joint session soon, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has not said whether he will co-sign.

Some, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, say it would be inappropriate.

“I want to hear from the Israeli prime minister,” Dean said.

Although Israel is unlikely to comply with the order, it will increase pressure on the increasingly isolated country.

Criticism of Israel’s conduct in the Gaza war is growing, especially since the focus has shifted to Rafah. This week alone, three European countries have announced that they will recognize a Palestinian state, and the chief prosecutor of another international court requested arrest warrants for Israeli leaders and Hamas officials.

A hostage agreement has not yet been reached because Israel and Hamas still do not agree on the terms of a ceasefire. Israel has announced that it will continue fighting until Hamas is completely wiped out in the Gaza Strip. However, the insurgents have regrouped in the northern part of the area that Israel first occupied months ago.

Dean said the hostages must remain a top priority for negotiators and leaders.

“I cannot understand why the world does not take action against Hamas and demand the return of the hostages,” she said. “We must do everything, the world must do everything in its power to ensure that the hostages are brought home.”

Meanwhile, the US continues to supply weapons to Israel despite growing criticism of Netanyahu. Dean recently called on President Joe Biden to halt arms sales if Israel continues its Rafah offensive.

“A full-scale attack there would have a very bad outcome, it would do nothing for the hostages and it would do nothing for the end of Hamas. It would only fuel more hatred against Israel,” Dean said. “That is why the United States, President Biden and all of us must try to get Mr. Netanyahu to fight this war more justly.”
