Tuesday's weather: Warnings issued for snow, rain, strong winds in multiple provinces | News24

The South African Weather Service has forecast cold, wet and windy conditions compounded by snow, rain and strong winds in multiple provinces.

Impact-based warnings

An Orange Level 6 warning has been issued for disruptive snow resulting in loss of livestock and crops as well as some communities being inaccessible over the north-eastern high ground of the Eastern Cape.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive snow resulting in icy roads and traffic disruptions is expected over the northern high ground of the Eastern Cape.

A Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain resulting in the localised flooding of roads and susceptible settlements is expected over the southern parts of the West Coast, western parts of the Cape Winelands, City of Cape Town and western parts of the Overberg municipalities.

A Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for strong damaging winds leading to difficulty in the driving of high-sided vehicles along major routes and damage to temporary structures in the extreme eastern parts of the Free State as well as the northern interior of KwaZulu-Natal.

A Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for damaging wind leading to localised disruptions to harbours and/or ports, difficult driving conditions along coastal routes/roads and choppy seas, and possible coastal infrastructure damage in exposed bays along the coast between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay.

Advisories

Very cold, wet and windy conditions are expected in places over the interior of the Eastern Cape, and southern high lying areas of the Namakwa District as well as the central and eastern interior of the Western Cape.

Possibility of snowfalls expected in places will likely exacerbate these conditions.

The weather in your region

Gauteng will be partly cloudy in the south. Otherwise, it will be fine and cold.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

Fine and cold to cool temperatures are expected in Mpumalanga but it will be warm over the Lowveld.

Limpopo can expect fine and cool to warm temperatures, but it will be cold in places in the south-west.

Fine and cold to cool conditions are forecast in the North West.

The Free State can expect fine temperatures in the north. Otherwise, cloudy and cold to extremely cold conditions are forecast with isolated showers and thundershowers in the southern part and along the Lesotho border.

Fine temperatures are expected in Northern Cape’s north.

Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cold to extremely cold but cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers along the coast and the southern parts.

It will be windy over the south-eastern parts.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate northerly to north-westerly, becoming south-easterly from late evening.

The Western Cape can expect cloudy and cold to cool conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers over the south-western to eastern parts but isolated in places in the north.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh northerly to north-westerly along the west coast.

Otherwise, a moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly reaching strong is forecast along the south coast from the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is low.

Cloudy and cold conditions are forecast for the western half of the Eastern Cape with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the east.

Snowfalls are possible over the northern high-lying areas.

The wind along the coast will be a light north-westerly, becoming a moderate to fresh westerly from the afternoon.

The eastern half of the province can expect cloudy conditions and cold to extremely cold temperatures with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the east.

The wind along the coast will a moderate to fresh north-westerly.

KwaZulu-Natal will be partly cloudy in the extreme south, otherwise fine and cool but cold temperatures are forecast for the west.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh westerly to north-westerly, becoming a northerly to north-easterly in the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is moderate.
