Thursday’s weather: Scorching day for two provinces, fire danger warning issued | News24



Extremely hot conditions that may cause fires are expected in at least two provinces.

A fire danger warning has been issued for parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape due to sweltering conditions, with some temperatures exceeding 40°C, according to the South African Weather Service.

The rest of the country can expect a range of partly cloudy to cloudy conditions and cool to warm temperatures, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. 

Impact-based warnings

A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements, low-lying roads and bridges has been issued for the Mopani and Vhembe district municipalities in Limpopo.

A Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels and personal watercraft between Cape Columbine and Cape Point in the morning.

Fire danger warning

Extremely high fire conditions are expected over the City of Cape Town, West Coast District and Drakenstein Municipality in the Western Cape, as well as the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape.

Advisories

Extremely hot conditions with maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C are expected over the West Coast District in the Western Cape and southern coastal areas of the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape.

Uncomfortable, very hot and humid conditions are expected over the Western Cape and parts of Namakwa District in the Northern Cape until Friday.

Gauteng can expect cloudy conditions with cool but warm temperatures in the north and isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

Cloudy and cool but cold temperatures along the escarpment are forecast for Mpumalanga.

Isolated morning showers and thundershowers are expected with scattered showers in the Lowveld.

Limpopo will be cloudy with cool to warm temperatures and scattered morning showers and thundershowers, but isolated showers in the south-west and south-central parts.

Partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are forecast in the North West, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The Free State can expect partly cloudy conditions and warm temperatures, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east.

Partly cloudy conditions in the extreme north-west are forecast for the Northern Cape at first.

Otherwise, fine and warm to hot conditions but very hot to extremely hot temperatures are expected in places in the west.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming fresh to strong from the afternoon.

The Western Cape will be partly cloudy over the eastern parts at first.

Otherwise, fine and hot to very hot temperatures are expected over the interior, with extremely hot conditions in the western interior.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly but easterly along the south coast and strong along the south-western coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

It will be cloudy with light morning rain in places in the south and western half of the Eastern Cape.

Otherwise, partly cloudy conditions becoming fine and warm to hot temperatures are forecast.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate easterly, becoming moderate to fresh south-easterly in the afternoon.

The eastern half of the province is expected to be partly cloudy with warm temperatures north of the escarpment.

Otherwise, it will be cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain in places.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate south-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal is expected to be partly cloudy with cool to warm temperatures in parts of the east.

Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected along the coast and adjacent interior, otherwise isolated.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is very high.
