Thursday’s weather: Heatwave lingers, as temperatures peak at mid to upper 30s in large parts of SA | News24



Persistently high temperatures are forecast in parts of the country.

Persistently high temperatures are expected to continue across large parts of the country until Friday, according to the South African Weather Service.

Impact-based warning:

There is a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, with possible strong and damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and/or large hail, over the eastern and western parts of the Free State, the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, and the western parts of North West. It may result in damage to vehicles and structures.

Finger danger warning: 

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places over the Northern Cape, the northern parts of the Western Cape, the western parts of the North West, the central and western parts of the Free State, the northern and western parts of the Eastern Cape, the northern parts and the lowveld of Limpopo, as well as the north-eastern interior of KwaZulu-Natal.

Advisory:

Heatwave conditions are expected over the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the central and eastern parts of the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Similar conditions are expected in the eastern and northern parts of the Eastern Cape, where it will improve in the west on Friday.

Gauteng will be very hot in the extreme north, otherwise partly cloudy and hot, with isolated thundershowers in the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

It will be partly cloudy and hot to very hot, but extremely hot in the extreme eastern parts of Mpumalanga.

Isolated afternoon thundershowers are expected over the central and western parts of the province. 

Limpopo can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions. It will be very hot in the extreme east.

It will be fine, becoming partly cloudy and hot to very hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the North West.

The Free State will be fine, becoming partly cloudy and hot to very hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers, which will be scattered in the northern and eastern parts of the province.

Fine and cool conditions are expected along the coastal parts of the Northern Cape, with morning fog patches.

It will be fine and warm to hot, but very hot to extremely hot in the east, where it will become partly cloudy, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-east.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming fresh in the afternoon.

It will be cool in the south-west, where it will be cloudy at first in the Western Cape, otherwise it will be fine and warm to hot, but partly cloudy in the south.

Hot conditions are expected in the eastern interior.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north-westerly to westerly, becoming southerly to south-westerly in the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

It will be partly cloudy and cool to warm along the coast in the western half of the Eastern Cape, otherwise it will be fine and hot to very hot, but partly cloudy from the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be light north-westerly, becoming light to moderate south-easterly from the morning.

The eastern half of the province can expect cloudy conditions along the coast, with drizzle and morning fog along the Wild Coast, otherwise it will be fine and warm to hot, but very hot in the north.

It will become partly cloudy, with isolated thunderstorms, over the interior from the afternoon. 

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly, becoming south-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal will be fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon, with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the north-east.

The wind along the coast will be moderate north-easterly north of Richards Bay, otherwise light easterly to south-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is very high.
