The LUXE Restaurant Awards for 2026 were held in refined style at the recently opened iconic MIRA restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg. The occasion brought together many of South Africa's most respected chefs and restaurateurs for what has become a defining evening in the national culinary calendar.
Set against a backdrop of contemporary elegance, the ceremony celebrated excellence across the country's culinary landscape, honoring both established institutions and rising culinary forces that are shaping the future of South African gastronomy.
Chef of the year: Carla Schulze's defining moment
Among the evening's most distinguished honors was the title of Chef of the Year, awarded to Carla Schulze. As the culinary force behind SALON in Cape Town, Schulze has earned praise for his confident, precise and deeply considered cooking. Its recognition marks not only an exceptional year for the restaurant but also its growing influence within the field of fine dining in the country.

SALON further solidified its position by receiving the LUXE Three Star award, placing it among a select group of restaurants recognized for sustained excellence and consistency at the highest level.

Innovation in Stellenbosch: the continued rise of DUSK
In the Cape Winelands, chef Callan Austin of DUSK received the Culinary Innovation Award, in recognition of his thoughtful and progressive approach to cooking. Known for his measured creativity and technical rigor, Austin continues to refine a style that balances imagination with discipline.

DUSK also won the LUXE Three Star Award, reinforcing its reputation as one of Stellenbosch's hottest nightlife destinations. Together, these accolades affirm the restaurant's steady rise and enduring appeal within a competitive regional landscape.

Milestones and recognitions in the Cape
In the Constantia Valley, Chefs Warehouse Beau Constantia, run by chef and patron Ivor Jones, received a LUXE Three Star award. This year also marks the restaurant's 10th anniversary, a major milestone for one of the region's most enduring dining destinations. Over the past decade, its hillside location and assured cuisine have consistently attracted both local customers and international visitors.

Chef-owners Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn of The Belly Group of Restaurants were also recognized for their achievements. Belly of the Beast received a LUXE Two-Star Award, while Galjoen received a LUXE One-Star Award. Located on Harrington Street in Cape Town's District Six, the two establishments have developed a distinctive identity based on a strong sense of place and a commitment to South African ingredients. Its continued recognition reflects both critical respect and a loyal following among diners.

Star Praise in a Celebrated Portfolio
The recognition extended to the entire Luke Dale Roberts restaurant portfolio, where consistency and character continue to define each dining experience. The Pot Luck Club Cape Town and The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg, led by Executive Group Chef Jason Kosmas, each received LUXE Two Star Awards. The honors reflect not only their sustained popularity, but also the dedication of the teams who deliver vibrant, carefully executed dishes night after night.

SALON's LUXE Three Star Award further reaffirmed its position among South Africa's most respected dining destinations. Meanwhile, The Test Kitchen Fledgelings received the LUXE One Star award, significant recognition for its role in nurturing emerging culinary talent. Beyond the award itself, the recognition speaks to a deeper commitment within the group: investing in young chefs, honing their craft and ensuring that the future of South African gastronomy remains in capable and creative hands.

Johannesburg's growing food influence
Johannesburg ranked highly in this year's results. OCASO was named Lifestyle Restaurant of the Year, an award that recognizes its growing presence within the city's gastronomic culture. The award reflects the restaurant's ability to cultivate a loyal local following while contributing significantly to the evolution of Johannesburg's dining identity.

Pot Luck Club Johannesburg received the title of Hotel Restaurant of the Year. The recognition coincides with the restaurant's first year at the award-winning The Peech Hotel on Melrose, marking an important milestone in a highly competitive urban dining scene. In a relatively short period, the Johannesburg outpost has developed a distinctive character while preserving the spirit of its Cape Town counterpart, attracting both hotel guests and dedicated local diners.

Reflecting the strength of South African gastronomy
Taken together, the results of the LUXE Restaurant Awards 2026 illustrate the remarkable breadth of culinary talent in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Cape Winelands. From established fine dining institutions to newer companies gaining traction, the honorees represent a food culture defined by ambition, creativity and resilience.
Ultimately, the evening celebrated the chefs and restaurateurs shaping South Africa's changing food narrative. Their dedication, innovation and passion continue to elevate the country's position on the global culinary stage, offering diners memorable and deeply authentic experiences.
