The official result of the 2024 national and provincial election began to closely resemble projections of the ANC losing support nationally after 59% of the results were tallied by Friday mid-morning.

With the governing party projected to receive just 40% of the vote, the bright blue Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) leaderboard posting official results confirmed the bottoming out of ANC support, yanking it below 50% for the first time since 1994 – a 30-year milestone no political party hopes to mark.

The official results show that 59% of votes had been counted by 11:00 on Friday, meaning 13 763 of South Africa’s 23293 voting districts had been counted and verified.

The true results starkly match the projections.

The official results place the ANC’s support at 41.9%, the DA at 23.3%, and former president Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party at 11.3%. The EFF is fourth with 9.5% of the vote and the IFP is fifth on the board with 2.7%.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) is in sixth place, and set to enter Parliament for the first time since its formation a decade ago, with 2.6% of the vote; followed by the Freedom Front Plus (1.5%) and ActionSA (1.1%).

  • In Gauteng, the ANC’s support stands at 35%, the DA at 28.5%, the EFF at 12.3%, MK Party at 10.3%, and ActionSA at 3%.
  • In KwaZulu-Natal, the official result places the MK Party at 43.9%, the ANC at 18.9%, the IFP at 15.4%, the DA at 14.8%, and the EFF at 2.4%.
  • In the Western Cape, the DA’s support stands at 52.8%, the ANC’s at 20.4%, the PA at 8.9%, and the EFF at 4.9%.
  • In the Eastern Cape, the ANC’s support stands at 65.8%, the DA at 12.4%, the EFF at 9.6% and the United Democratic Movement at 2.8%.

The ANC took a massive knock in Mpumalanga, standing at 49.8% of the vote. The MK Party is second at 18%, and DA third at 13.2%.

The ANC is also struggling to cross the 50% threshold in the Northern Cape, with official results currently at 49.2%.

The ANC remains in the lead in Limpopo, the Free State and North West, however, its support does indicate a slight decline in those provinces too.

With the exception of the MK Party, which is making heavy inroads into the ANC’s support, the host of newly formed political parties are underperforming, while the DA’s report remains stable.

The IEC results indicate that all votes have been counted and are in the process of being verified. The publication of 100% of the result is likely to conclude by Saturday morning, barring any issues emerging during the verification process.

The tally of the results continues.
