(NewsNation) — Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley wrote “Finish them off” on an artillery shell during her trip to Israel on Tuesday, sparking widespread criticism online.

Danny Danon, a member of Israel’s Knesset, posted a picture of Haley signing the gun on X on Monday.

“This is what my friend, former ambassador Nikki Haley, wrote on a grenade today during a visit to an artillery post on the northern border,” he said.

However, this step quickly drew criticism, including from Kenneth Rotha former executive director of Human Rights Watch who is currently a visiting professor at Princeton.

“Nikki Haley is showing who she is. While Israeli bombings have killed far more Palestinian civilians than fighters, she signs a bomb with ‘Finish them off,'” Roth wrote on X. “Why doesn’t she just sign: ‘I support Israeli war crimes.'”

Israel has been accused of war crimes by various sides since it began bombing Gaza, killing 36,000 Palestinians and causing widespread devastation, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The offensive was launched after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostage.

The International Criminal Court Earlier this month, the prosecutor requested arrest warrants against Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanya, his defense minister and three Hamas leaders for war crimes. In addition, the UN’s highest court called on Israel to limit casualties and damage as it continues its offensive in Gaza after South Africa accused the country of genocide. Israel has denied these accusations.

Haley’s trip came days after Israeli forces launched airstrikes that set fire to a tent camp for displaced Palestinians and killed 45 people, fueling calls for a ceasefire among progressive politicians and activists who have criticized President Joe Biden’s administration for its support for Israel.

Biden has said he will stop supplying offensive weapons to Israel if the country attacks the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where many displaced Palestinians have sought shelter. However, NewsNation’s The Hill reports that while White House officials called the images from Rafah “tragic or horrific,” they said Israel’s actions did not cross the line. “Red line” that would lead to a change in US policy” because it was an air strike and not a ground invasion.
