‘Massacre’ as Israel steps up Gaza bombardment for Christmas

The attack is one of the deadliest in the nearly three-month war.

More than 100 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the center of the Gaza Strip overnight.

At least 70 people were killed in attacks in the Maghazi refugee camp in the center of the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Health Ministry said late Sunday. In attacks on the Bureij refugee camp, the number of victims rose to over 100.

Health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said the death toll in the Maghazi refugee camp was likely to rise.

“What is happening in Maghazi camp is a massacre carried out in an overcrowded residential area,” he said.

Bodies are piling up at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

Dozens more were reportedly injured and several homes were destroyed in the attack. Families have dug through the rubble to find survivors.

The bombs fell on houses and buildings, Hani Mahmoud reported from Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, destroying neighborhoods and infrastructure, such as roads leading in and out of refugee camps.

Since the Bureij refugee camp was also destroyed overnight, about 100 people were killed in the last 12 hours, he added. The vast majority of victims are women and children.

“We were all targeted,” said Ahmad Turokmani, who lost several family members including his daughter and grandson. “There is no safe place in Gaza anyway.”

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, said the Maghazi refugee camp was one of the most densely populated areas in the center of the Gaza Strip.

He said it was one of the places where the Israeli military had previously ordered Palestinians in Gaza to evacuate. Now the camp has been “completely razed to the ground,” he said.

“The vast majority of casualties at this time have been civilians, including civilians [a] two weeks [old] Baby killed in cold blood in this genocide,” Azzoum said.

He compared the attack to one on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza last week, killing at least 90 people.

The Maghazi camp was attacked last month Even when at least 50 Palestinians were killed.

Azzoum said the camp’s surroundings had been subjected to heavy Israeli shelling in recent days.

The closest hospital to the camp is Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. However, health facilities across the Gaza Strip are no longer functional as Israel has bombed the area for a third month, killing more than 20,400 Palestinians and displacing more than 80 percent of the 2.3 million people since October 7 live there.

“The entire medical care system in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating and [is] on the verge of collapse,” said Azzoum.

Hamas called the airstrike on the Maghazi camp “a terrible massacre” and said it was “a new war crime.”

The Israeli military spokesman’s office said it was reviewing reports of the attack.

Since the UN Security Council resolution Mahmoud noted that the scale of airstrikes passed on Friday, increasing aid to Gaza, has only increased.

“There is a huge gap between the sheer scale of destruction wrought by Israeli forces and the promise of further assistance,” he noted.
