L’Ormarins King’s Plate

L’Ormarins King’s Plate

As the summer season progresses, the prestigious L’Ormarins King’s Plate returns to the newly refurbished Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday 6 January 2024.

As always, true to form, this iconic Cape Town summer racing festival has a rich history spanning over one hundred and fifty years. Overall, it promises an exceptional combination of social and sporting excitement.

Celebrating over 150 years of equestrian heritage

The Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate dates back to 1861 and holds a special place in equestrian history as the oldest continuous horse race in South Africa.

Established in honor of Queen Victoria, it continues to be celebrated in honor of the British monarch. After King Charles III ascended the throne, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate was renamed L’Ormarins King’s Plate last year, marking a 19-year streak under the previous name.

As the pinnacle of the Cape Town racing season, the racing event not only attracts horse racing enthusiasts but also brings together the best thoroughbreds to compete for the coveted title of L’Ormarins King’s Plate champion and a share of the prize money of almost R2 million. .

The highlight of the 2024 festival is the second edition of the Okapi Ladies International race. In fact, in this race, contested exclusively by female riders, the 1,200m track will compete for an impressive prize pool of R200,000. Inspired by Britain’s Magnolia Cup, it was a popular addition when it was first held earlier this year at the 2023 L’Ormarins Kings Plate.

Fashion, fun and glamor on full screen

Cartier, the renowned luxury brand, returns as a sponsor of the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes and Best Dressed competition at L’Ormarins King’s Plate 2024. Overseeing three categories: Lady’s Best Dressed, Men’s Best Dressed and Best Hat, these off-piste competitions give participants the opportunity to demonstrate an elegant and sophisticated style.

In addition to Cartier, several sponsors have contributed to the success of the event. These sponsors include Drakenstein Stud Farm, Anthonij Rupert Wines, Franschhoek Motor Museum, Okapi, Heineken, Schweppes and Merchants on Long.

Donovan Everitt, Chief Operating Officer of Cape Racing, says: “The 2024 LKP marks an exciting milestone as L’Ormarins celebrates 20 years as a partner. “This anniversary highlights the enduring success of L’Ormarins King’s Plate and the long-standing partnerships that have contributed to its prominence in the Cape Town summer season.”

L’Ormarins King’s Plate exciting new additions for 2024

Organizers of the 2024 L’Ormarins King’s Plate are highlighting several complementary events to encourage all attendees to be an integral part of race day. One of the featured events of the upcoming program is a photography and writing contest. The competition not only engages attendees in a fresh and interactive way, but also allows them to showcase their creativity and possibly win exciting prizes.

Additionally, the photography contest encourages guests to capture the essence of the day, from stylish fashion to exciting races. It’s not just about technical skills but about conveying the heart and soul of the event through the lens.

The writing contest, on the other hand, invites word creators to craft narratives that bring the day to life on paper. It’s about sharing personal experiences and creating a lasting record of the Plate’s unique spirit.

These complementary events aim to make L’Ormarins King’s Plate 2024 a more personal and engaging experience, allowing attendees to create lasting memories and be part of the event’s history.
