Liverpool hold Man City as Haaland scores fastest 50 Premier League goals

Liverpool broke City’s 23-game winning streak at the Etihad as the clash between the two Premier League leaders ended 1-1.

A goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 80th minute secured Liverpool a 1:1 draw on Saturday against leaders Manchester City, leaving Jürgen Klopp’s side a point behind top spot in the tight race for the Premier League title.

Erling Haaland gave defending champions City a first-half lead at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, making him the fastest player to score 50 goals in the league.

But Liverpool benefited when the Norwegian failed to score a second goal from close range in the 79th minute. The visitors immediately went on the attack and Alexander-Arnold fired a shot past City goalkeeper Ederson.

The draw ended a remarkable 23-game winning streak at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s City, who sit top of the table with 29 points after 13 games. Liverpool has 28 points.
Arsenal can go top if they beat Brentford later in the day.

Haaland scored the first goal in the 27th minute with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson misjudged a free kick that was intercepted by Nathan Ake, who was playing for Haaland.

From then on it felt inevitable where the ball would end up as the striker turned and shot into the bottom corner, despite Alisson having a hand on his shot.

The game-winning goal came in 48 games, breaking the record set by former Manchester United and Newcastle striker Andy Cole, who scored a total of 50 goals in 65 games.

There was a double fist bump in the executive chairs, where Haaland’s father, former City player Alf-Inge, was celebrating.

Back on the pitch, the player was mobbed by the Blue Shirts after giving the home team the advantage over the side who are likely to be one of their biggest contenders for the title this season.

But he was left to regret not converting in the second half after Liverpool punished City.

Alisson got another chance 20 minutes from time when, under minimal pressure from Manuel Akanji, he missed a corner and Ruben Dias fired the ball into the goal.

However, a VAR review failed to overturn the on-field referee’s decision to award the Liverpool goalkeeper a soft free kick.

Klopp turned to his bench and tried to provoke a reaction, introducing Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Diaz’s father was among the crowd after he was flown from Liverpool to England to enjoy the Christmas season following a kidnapping in his native Colombia.

And Diaz was involved in Liverpool’s equalizer against the run of play ten minutes from time.

The Colombian picked out Salah, who placed the ball into the path of Alexander-Arnold for a fantastic finish into the bottom corner.

City pushed for a winner in eight minutes of added time but were thwarted as they failed to win at home for the first time since December 31 last year.

Alexander-Arnold said it was an important point in the journey for Liverpool, who finished fifth last year.

“We haven’t had too many good results here in general. “It’s a point won,” Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports.

“It wasn’t a great performance from us, but there were positives and we had chances to win the game.”

Liverpool coach Klopp said it was a good result for his team in a “difficult environment”.

“It’s no coincidence that they win so many home games. It is a place where you have to be willing to suffer. The quality that they have, the flexibility that they have, they really know exactly who is going where.

“We are still in the process but I think if we had played really well today we could have won. We didn’t – we played well.”

City boss Pep Guardiola said he was happy with the performance, if not the result.

“Excellent performance. “Against an incredible top team – the way we played was excellent,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“We were good in all areas, at the back, in building up the game with the goalkeeper. We only conceded two shots on goal, which complements the way we work.

“We know what quality Erling has, it was a really good finish. He also had the header.

“It was an excellent performance. I’m so pleased. After many years of still performing and running so well, there is so much to be proud of.”
