By Christopher McMichael

Several years ago, I was in a Hawaiian beach-themed bar, located in a tower block in Japan. I met two garrulous Australian surfers who, after finding out that I was born in Durban, regaled me with tales of their own adventures on surf trips across Asia.

I listened to these stories with rapt fascination. There was the beauty of the roaring waves, the endless sky stretching towards the horizon, and the visceral spirituality of surfing itself. Rather than trying to dominate nature, wave riders have to follow the ocean with respect, flow with its process.
