Western Cape police are in pursuit of three people who are linked to the murders of two City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers in two separate incidents in Nyanga earlier this year.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie urged members of the public not to approach them.

In the first incident, Pojie said police responded to a murder scene in Sonwabile Drive, Old Crossroads, on Thursday, 18 May, just after 14:00, where the bodies of three men were discovered.

“The victims came under fire while sitting in a VW Polo Vivo. One of the victims was identified as Siphelo Magwa, 25, an off-duty LEAP officer,” Pojie said.

In the second incident, on 4 August, LEAP Officer Zanikaya Kwinana, 33, and his colleagues were patrolling when they came under attack during a taxi violence protest in Nyanga.

“Kwinana sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his head during the incident,” said Pojie.

Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts can contact the investigating officer, Colonel Mtheto Mxabaniso, at 082 339 7329 or Captain Lukhanyo Magathla at 082 411 3245.

Meanwhile, News24 reported that the City of Cape Town offered a reward of R1.35 million for information on Kwinana’s murder.

Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the initial amount was the maximum R250 000, but several benefactors had approached the city to pledge more funds.

“Officer Kwinana died after sustaining several gunshot wounds when the Law Enforcement vehicle he was travelling in was ambushed in Nyanga,” Smith said.

Smith added that, in Magwa’s case, he was killed alongside two of his family members when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle they were sitting in.

“The city would like to appeal to the public to please come forward if they have information. The loved ones and colleagues of the victims remain devastated by their deaths, and bringing the killers to justice remains a priority,” Smith said.
