‘Dream come true’: Kylian Mbappe signs five-year deal with Real Madrid

Mbappe joins the Spanish and European champions as a free agent one month after terminating his contract with PSG.

French striker Kylian Mbappe has joined Real Madrid as a free agent on a five-year contract, the LaLiga club announced, ending a years-long transfer saga.

The signing was confirmed in a social media statement by Real Madrid on Monday.

“Real Madrid CF and Kylian Mbappe have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next five seasons,” said the Spanish and European champions.

Shortly after the club's announcement, Mbappe shared pictures of himself as a teenager in the Real Madrid jersey and of his meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo on his social media profiles.

“A dream come true,” he wrote. “So happy and proud to join the club of my dreams, @realmadrid.”

“Nobody can understand how excited I am right now. I can't wait to see you, Madridistas, and thank you for your incredible support. Hala Madrid!”

The 25-year-old captain of the French national team announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a video published on the social media platform X on May 10.

Mbappe will join Real Madrid in July after his contract with PSG expires on June 30, but the striker will be unveiled before joining the French squad for the European Championships in Germany.

Mbappe joins a star-studded team in Madrid that includes players such as Ballon d'Or favourites Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham and is coached by Italian Carlo Ancelotti – the most successful coach in Champions League history with five titles.

Although Mbappe won several trophies with PSG, often achieving the domestic double and treble, the Champions League has eluded him and remains the only major award missing from his brilliant career.

Mbappe leaves PSG after seven years at the club, with whom he won six Ligue 1 titles and four French Cups and ended his career in the capital as the club's all-time top scorer with 256 goals.

The 2018 World Cup winner surprised PSG last year with a letter explaining that he would not take up the option of a one-year extension when his contract expires in June.

The letter led to a stalemate with the club and Mbappe was initially dropped from the first-team squad before being reinstated.

By allowing Mbappe to play out the final year of his contract, PSG were unable to recoup the €180 million ($196 million) transfer fee they paid to sign him from AS Monaco in 2017.

When the transfer was completed, Mbappe became the second most expensive player of all time after his former PSG teammate Neymar.

Real Madrid had courted Mbappe in the past but were unable to sign the player as an offer from the Spanish club was rejected and Mbappe signed a contract extension with PSG in May 2022.

Now that Mbappe is finally in their ranks, the club can consolidate their dominance in LaLiga. Last season, the club lost just once and won the title by 10 points. They remained unbeaten in the Champions League.
