Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has died in London. His death was confirmed in a statement issued by his family and signed by his longtime media aide, Garba Shehu. According to the statement, the former President passed away on Sunday afternoon at a clinic in the United Kingdom.
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the statement read.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari first led Nigeria as a military ruler from December 1983 to August 1985 following a coup. He later returned to power through the ballot box in 2015, serving two consecutive terms as a civilian president until 2023.
Buhari’s presidency was defined by a tough stance against corruption, a focus on infrastructure development, and an aggressive push against insecurity. His leadership, however, drew sharp criticism over economic management and human rights concerns.
